San Diego Wave FC announced that it has signed forward Melanie Barcenas to a two-year contract extension through the 2028 season. The 18-year-old San Diego native is enjoying a breakout season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), establishing herself as one of the league’s top young attacking players.
Barcenas scored six goals in the 2026 season, the most by any teenager in the NWSL that year, including two game-winning goals and one assist. She appeared in 23 matches, starting 12 of them, and played a total of 1,088 minutes. Barcenas also led the team with 24 shots on target. On September 12, she tied the NWSL single-season record for goals by a teenager, joining a list of notable players including Sam Kerr, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, and Emeri Adames.
On August 21, 2026, Barcenas had a standout performance against Utah Royals FC where she recorded both a goal and an assist, earning NWSL Assist of the Week honors. Since signing with San Diego Wave FC in 2023 at age 15, she has made 57 appearances and recorded eight goals, which ranks sixth in the club’s history. On July 26, 2026, she became the second-youngest player in NWSL history to reach 50 regular-season appearances.
Barcenas played an important role in helping San Diego Wave FC capture the 2023 NWSL Shield, the first major trophy in the club’s history. Internationally, she has represented the United States at multiple youth levels and was part of the U.S. U-17 team that won the 2024 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship.
“I am really proud to represent my city and this club that has believed in me from the beginning,” Barcenas said. “This season has been an important one for me, helping me grow and gain confidence as a player, and I am excited to keep pushing myself, contributing to this team and doing everything I can to help bring more success and championships to San Diego.”
