SEASIDE, Calif. — Griffin Welch, goalkeeper for the CSU Monterey Bay Otters men’s soccer team, was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Defensive Player of the Week after strong performances in the team’s first two conference matches.
Welch played all 180 minutes in matches against Stanislaus State and No. 1 Cal State LA, allowing just one goal across both games for a 0.50 goals-against average. Against Stanislaus State, CSU Monterey Bay earned a 1-1 draw while limiting the Warriors to only one shot on goal despite 12 total attempts.
Welch’s standout performance came against the top-ranked Cal State LA Golden Eagles, where he posted six saves and recorded a shutout in a 0-0 draw at Cardinale Stadium. The Otters played with 10 men for more than 78 minutes due to a red card but were able to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless, marking the first time Cal State LA did not earn a victory this season. Welch’s shutout was his second of the campaign.
These efforts helped CSU Monterey Bay earn two points to start their CCAA play. The Otters next face Cal State San Marcos on the road.
CSB Take
Griffin Welch’s selection as CCAA Defensive Player of the Week highlights his essential contribution to CSU Monterey Bay’s defensive success early in the season. His resilience in the demanding match against the nation’s top-ranked team while short-handed illustrates his capability to perform under pressure. Maintaining performances of this caliber will be important for CSU Monterey Bay as they look to build momentum in conference competition.
