Los Angeles Chargers tackle Rashawn Slater underwent ankle surgery in Los Angeles on Oct. 8, the team announced the following day. The Chargers said the surgery was successful and that they planned to place him on injured reserve. Slater suffered the injury during the Oct. 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
An injury confirmed after the Seattle game
Jim Harbaugh had identified the injury as a high ankle sprain in his Oct. 5 update. Slater left the Seattle game in the fourth quarter and did not return. The team's surgical announcement did not provide a date for his return to game action.
The setback added to a difficult week for the Chargers' offensive line. Joe Alt also left the Seattle game with a neck injury, while Trevor Penning exited with a head injury. Those absences forced Los Angeles to adjust several positions during the game.
Changes across the offensive line
Logan Taylor moved from left guard to left tackle after Slater's departure. Jake Slaughter shifted to left guard, and Jacob Spomer entered at center. Travis Burke had already replaced Alt at right tackle, leaving the Chargers to finish with a substantially changed line.
Los Angeles then lost 23–17 to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 11 and remained winless through five games. The team's next scheduled game is at Kansas City before its Week 7 bye. Slater's announcement makes protecting Justin Herbert and building continuity along the line central issues for the offense.
CSB Take
The Chargers need a workable plan for the line they can actually field. Shuffling multiple positions makes communication and protection assignments harder to maintain. Slater's return timetable belongs to future team updates, while the immediate football task is giving Herbert enough protection to run the offense.
