San Diego State Aztecs returner Jaylon Hawkins earned Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Oct. 12. It was his third award of the season and second in consecutive weeks. Hawkins returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown in San Diego State’s loss at Oregon State on Oct. 10.
Return production
Hawkins has scored on a kickoff return in each of the last two games. He also caught a 43-yard pass against Oregon State and finished with 153 all-purpose yards. The conference’s weekly awards are selected by the league’s media.
Through six games, Hawkins has returned 14 kickoffs for 543 yards and three touchdowns. That gives him an average of 38.8 yards per return. San Diego State returns home to face Fresno State on Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Pacific.
CSB Take
Hawkins has made the return unit a consistent source of scoring chances. His production can change field position even when a return does not reach the end zone. San Diego State still needs stronger play across the rest of the team to turn those moments into victories.
