The San Jose Sharks beat the Los Angeles Kings 5–4 in overtime at SAP Center on Oct. 3. Igor Chernyshov scored twice, including the winner at 3:18 of overtime from a Macklin Celebrini pass. San Jose earned its second overtime win in two games to begin the season.
A second-period swing favors San Jose
Adrian Kempe opened the scoring on the power play for Los Angeles. San Jose answered with second-period goals from Tyler Toffoli, Kiefer Sherwood and Nolan Allan to build a 3–1 lead. Quinton Byfield's power-play goal in the closing seconds of the period brought the Kings within one.
Chernyshov restored San Jose's two-goal advantage early in the third period. The Kings then responded through Erik Haula and Artemi Panarin, tying the game at four. That rally sent the California rivals to overtime before Chernyshov supplied the final shot.
Both teams receive multi-point efforts
Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves for San Jose, while Anton Forsberg stopped 20 shots for Los Angeles. Chernyshov added an assist, and Celebrini finished with two assists. Kempe, Byfield and Panarin each recorded a goal and an assist for the Kings.
CSB Take
The Sharks found another winning play in overtime, but allowing a late two-goal lead to disappear remains a concern. The Kings showed they could respond after falling behind and received offense from their leading forwards. Both teams can take something from the game, with San Jose needing cleaner finishes and Los Angeles needing to turn its rallies into two points.
