Sharks lose 3–1 to Oilers despite Celebrini’s return goal

Celebrini scored in his return to the lineup, but San Jose could not erase Edmonton's three-goal lead at SAP Center.

The San Jose Sharks lost to the Edmonton Oilers 3–1 at SAP Center on Oct. 10. Macklin Celebrini scored San Jose's only goal after returning from a two-game absence. The result left the Sharks 3–2–0 through their first five games.

Edmonton creates separation in the third

Mattias Ekholm gave Edmonton a first-period lead. Vasily Podkolzin and Alex Formenton then scored early in the third period, increasing the Oilers' advantage to three. San Jose faced a larger deficit even though neither team had scored in the second period.

Celebrini answered at 11:19 of the third period, with Michael Misa receiving the assist. The Sharks could not produce another goal to close the remaining gap. Tristan Jarry finished with 19 saves for Edmonton, while Yaroslav Askarov made 17 for San Jose.

Celebrini returns to the lineup

Celebrini had missed two games because of a lower-body injury. His return restored a central option to San Jose's attack, and he finished the Edmonton game with 21:59 of ice time. The goal marked a positive individual return within a team result that still needed more offense.

CSB Take

The Sharks gained an important player back but could not solve the Oilers often enough. A close game became much harder to recover when Edmonton struck twice early in the third period. San Jose needs more scoring support around Celebrini and fewer stretches that let an opponent create that kind of separation.
