The Chabot College women’s basketball team began their 2026-27 season on November 3 with a 63-46 loss to Diablo Valley College. Despite the defeat, the team showed signs of promise, particularly in their defensive efforts and rebounding.
Head coach Zakiya Mahoney acknowledged the team’s positive aspects following the game, highlighting their 46 rebounds, 11 steals, and six blocks. She noted the team forcefully crashed the boards and created turnovers, though they ultimately lost the points-off-turnover battle.
Returner Jasmine Bertucci led the scoring with 12 points while also adding four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Nyla McCoy recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, along with three assists, five steals, and one block. Newcomer Mikayah (Kai) Jackson contributed 10 points and led the team with five steals, showcasing defensive prowess. Dalasia McDonald, in her collegiate debut, posted a team-high field-goal percentage with seven points, eight rebounds and a block.
Coming off the bench, newcomer Destiny Finley led the team in rebounds with 12, while fellow debutant Rayniesha Staine added six rebounds and four blocks, demonstrating effective rim protection. Chabot’s aggressive style earned them 23 trips to the free throw line, underscoring their competitive approach despite the loss.
CSB Take
Chabot College’s women’s basketball team displayed a strong defensive foundation and rebounding intensity in their season opener that can be built upon in the coming weeks. Although the offensive output was limited and the team lost key points off turnovers, the contributions from both returning players and newcomers provide a blend of experience and fresh energy. If Coach Mahoney’s squad continues to refine their offensive execution while maintaining their defensive aggressiveness, they have the potential to improve their competitiveness as the season progresses.
