Bay FC returns to action on Sunday, October 18, 2026, hosting Portland Thorns FC in a pivotal National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) regular-season match at PayPal Park in San Jose. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. PT, with live coverage on ESPN. This game marks Bay FC’s first home match in three weeks as they seek to get back in the win column while impacting Portland’s playoff positioning.
Bay FC Head Coach Emma Coates emphasized reinforcing the team’s identity while focusing on neutralizing Portland’s dynamic front four. “They’ve got dynamic players across the front four. Neutralizing that will be important, and that just comes back to doing our jobs well,” Coates said. She also noted the team’s ongoing efforts to improve both on and off the pitch.
Defender Maddie Moreau highlighted the priority to rebuild team connections following the international break and to enjoy playing soccer as they build toward next season. Bay FC will benefit from the return of nine players with recent international experience, including forward Karlie Lema, who has scored eight goals since midseason—the second-most in the NWSL during that span—and recently scored for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team.
Portland Thorns FC enters the match in seventh place with 43 points, just three points above the playoff cut line in a tight six-team race. Midfielder Pietra Tordin leads the Thorns with 17 scoring contributions, including nine assists, ranking her among the league’s top playmakers. However, forward Sophia Wilson will be suspended for this match and the next following a red card on October 3.
Historically, the teams have met five times, with Bay FC winning two matches. Their encounters have been competitive and high scoring, totaling 15 combined goals. The upcoming Sunday afternoon match at PayPal Park promises to be a key contest with playoff implications.
CSB Take
This match represents a significant opportunity for Bay FC to solidify their team identity and build momentum during the final stretch of the regular season. Karlie Lema’s scoring form and the renewed team cohesion post-international break will be crucial factors in their attempt to secure a home victory. With Portland fighting to maintain playoff position and facing key absences, Bay FC’s performance will indicate their progress and aspirations as the 2026 NWSL season approaches its conclusion.
