Cal Poly Pomona Broncos men's soccer defeated UC Merced Bobcats 1-0 at Kellogg Stadium as Marvin Gamez scored on a penalty kick and Jack Chapman made nine saves to record a shutout, improving the Broncos to 3-3-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.

Cal Poly Pomona Broncos men’s soccer secured a 1-0 victory over UC Merced Bobcats on September 25, 2026, at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona, California. Marvin Gamez converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute, providing the only goal in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup.

Gamez’s penalty goal was his team-leading fifth of the season and third scored from the penalty spot. He finished with four shots and accounted for two of the Broncos’ three shots on goal. Aleksandar Somov contributed the other shot on target in the 63rd minute.

UC Merced outshot Cal Poly Pomona 18-9, but the Broncos limited the Bobcats to nine shots on target. Jack Chapman made nine saves to record his third shutout of the season and played a crucial role in preserving the clean sheet.

This win improved Cal Poly Pomona’s record to 3-3-2 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play. It was only the second meeting between the two men’s soccer programs, with Cal Poly Pomona now undefeated against UC Merced at 2-0.

Cal Poly Pomona is scheduled to host Cal State Monterey Bay the Sunday following this match.

CSB Take

Cal Poly Pomona’s narrow 1-0 victory highlights the importance of precise finishing and strong goalkeeping in closely contested conference matches. Marvin Gamez’s ability to convert from the penalty spot continues to be a vital asset for the Broncos’ offense, while Jack Chapman’s consistent shot-stopping prevents opponents from capitalizing on numerous attempts. Maintaining this defensive composure and offensive efficiency will be key for Cal Poly Pomona as they aim to improve their standing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association this season.
