The California State University Northridge (CSUN) Women’s Soccer team swept the Big West Conference weekly awards following an unbeaten road trip in Utah, the conference office announced Monday.
Junior forward Yasmin Azar was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals across two matches, including her first career brace in a 4-2 victory over Utah Tech on September 10. Azar also scored a crucial second-half equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Southern Utah on September 13. Her efforts have led her to top the team’s scoring charts early this season.
Junior defender Siena Navarra earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Navarra played every minute in both matches, assisting Azar’s equalizing goal against Southern Utah and making a game-saving clearance near the goal line late in that contest. She has contributed defensively and offensively with three points and has played significant minutes this season.
Freshman midfielder Theresa Castro received Rookie of the Week recognition after scoring her first collegiate goal off the bench in the match against Southern Utah. She also took two shots in 62 minutes of play and ranks fourth on the team in shots this season.
This marks the first time since 2021 that CSUN has swept all three weekly Big West women’s soccer awards. The Matadors completed their non-conference play undefeated on this Utah trip and are set to open Big West competition on September 23 against UC San Diego at home. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
CSB Take
This sweep of the Big West weekly awards highlights California State University Northridge Women’s Soccer’s balanced strength across offense, defense and emerging talent. Azar’s goal-scoring capacity, Navarra’s defensive leadership, and Castro’s immediate contribution as a freshman demonstrate a depth of skill that could propel the Matadors as contenders in Big West play. Maintaining this level of performance will be key as they enter the conference schedule.
