Cassh Maluia made his debut for the USA Eagles men’s rugby union team in a narrow 19-16 loss to Canada during the Pacific Nations Cup. The former NFL linebacker has made a remarkable transition from American football to international rugby.
Maluia’s athletic career began in football, playing quarterback in high school and linebacker at the University of Wyoming. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots and also spent time with the Tennessee Titans. Despite making appearances on active rosters, he faced the uncertainties of NFL life, including frequent releases and practice squad assignments.
After stepping away from football, Maluia found rugby through touch rugby in Wyoming, a sport familiar to him through family members. He joined the Glendale Raptors’ crossover program and then progressed to professional rugby in Major League Rugby. He signed with the Chicago Hounds in 2024, played for San Diego Legion in 2025, and joined California Legion in 2026, helping the latter reach the MLR Championship final that year.
His performance at California Legion led to selection by USA Rugby head coach Scott Lawrence. Maluia earned his first international cap for the USA Eagles as a center against Canada. He has expressed appreciation for rugby’s team culture and camaraderie, which contrasted with his NFL experience.
Looking ahead, Maluia aims to be part of the USA Eagles squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
