The Los Angeles Chargers signed tight end Hayden Rucci to their active roster from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad on September 22, 2026. The move came alongside the team waiving wide receiver Gary Jennings.
Rucci was brought in to reinforce the tight end position after the Chargers placed Charlie Kolar and David Njoku on injured reserve due to injuries. This left Oronde Gadsden as the only other tight end on the active roster.
Rucci, 25, began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent in 2024, initially signing with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in four games during the 2025 season, recording one special teams tackle. He has also spent time with the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers before joining the Jaguars’ practice squad.
At the University of Wisconsin, Rucci played from 2020 to 2023 after redshirting in 2019. He appeared in 29 games with 18 starts, totaling 17 receptions for 200 yards and one touchdown. He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree during his collegiate career.
Rucci reunites with Chargers Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel, who coached him while he was with the Dolphins. The addition is aimed at shoring up tight end depth as the Chargers manage injuries early in the NFL season.
