The San Diego Toreros defeated the Denver Pioneers 3–2 in women’s soccer on Oct. 11 at Torero Stadium. Maquena O’Callaghan scored all three goals as San Diego twice came from behind on Senior Day. The result gave the Toreros their first West Coast Conference victory of the season.
Three goals on Senior Day
O’Callaghan tied the match in the 23rd minute after Denver scored first. The Pioneers regained the lead on a penalty kick before halftime. O’Callaghan converted San Diego’s penalty in the 72nd minute to level the score again.
She completed the hat trick in the 78th minute by finishing a rebound after two saved attempts. Ilise Medrano made four saves, including three after the winning goal. San Diego finished with a season-high 10 shots on goal.
CSB Take
San Diego kept responding instead of allowing either deficit to settle the match. O’Callaghan supplied the finishing, and Medrano protected the lead through the closing minutes. That combination gives the Toreros a useful model for turning a difficult start into a positive conference result.
