On October 27, 2001, the Santa Clara Broncos women’s cross country team captured their first West Coast Conference (WCC) championship at the Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont, California. The Broncos ended the University of Portland Pilots’ five-year championship streak by defeating them by 17 points, marking a significant milestone for the program.
Freshman runner Robin (Bell) Bedilion led Santa Clara with a third-place finish in 19 minutes, 3 seconds over the challenging 5-kilometer course, earning all-WCC first team honors. Other key contributors included Jenny Smokey, Andrea Gastelum, Milena Basile, and Katie Hansen, who placed 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively, helping to secure the historic team victory.
The season unfolded under first-year head coach Tom Service, who brought new rigor and enthusiasm to the program and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year. His leadership and a newly instilled discipline proved instrumental in guiding the Broncos to the top of the conference.
For Bedilion, the championship was a transformative experience. Initially entering the season with no expectations for a title, she found camaraderie and support in the team, including memorable cross country camps at Santa Cruz that built trust and friendships. These bonds endured well beyond their collegiate careers, influencing her personal life profoundly, including meeting her future husband through the Santa Clara athletics community.
