Stockton Ports Lose 3-1 to San Jose Giants in California League Playoff Series

The Stockton Ports were eliminated from the California League playoffs following a 3-1 loss to the San Jose Giants. Drew Smith's two-run double and solo home run powered the Giants. Stockton will open the 2027 season against San Jose on April 2.

The Stockton Ports’ playoff run concluded with a 3-1 loss to the San Jose Giants in game two of the Northern Division Series of the California League playoffs in San Jose, California. The Giants’ victory advanced them to the California League Championship Series.

San Jose jumped ahead early by scoring two runs in the first inning off Stockton starter Donny Troconis, who was forced to exit the game due to a finger injury. Jackson Phipps relieved Troconis and pitched four scoreless innings, helping keep the Ports competitive.

Stockton scored their lone run in the fifth inning after a misplayed fly ball by San Jose center fielder Andy Polanco allowed Alex Sosa to reach second base. Roman Martin’s subsequent double drove in the run, trimming the Giants’ lead to 2-1.

The Ports had scoring chances late in the game, including in the eighth inning after a sacrifice bunt advanced Max Durrington into scoring position. However, Stockton was unable to deliver key hits, and the Giants extended their lead immediately when Drew Smith hit a solo home run in the eighth. Smith accounted for all three of San Jose’s RBIs, with a two-run double in the first inning and his solo homer in the eighth.

Stockton threatened in the ninth inning with the tying run at the plate, but San Jose closer Samir Chires struck out Edgar Montero to secure the series win.

With this result, Stockton holds a 7-6 edge over San Jose in all-time playoff series. The Ports will open their 2027 season on April 2 in San Jose, followed by a home opener against Fresno on April 6 at Banner Island Ballpark. Season tickets and mini plans for the 2027 season are currently available.

CSB Take

The Stockton Ports showed resilience throughout the series but were ultimately undone by timely hitting from the San Jose Giants, led by Drew Smith’s impactful performance. Pitching changes due to injury and missed scoring opportunities hampered Stockton’s ability to mount a comeback. Looking ahead, the Ports must leverage this offseason to strengthen key areas and prepare for a strong start to the 2027 campaign against familiar division rivals.
