Oruha Hayashi scored both goals as UCLA defeated Illinois 2–1 in women’s soccer on Oct. 11. Her 77th-minute winner gave the Bruins their sixth consecutive victory. UCLA improved to 10–3–1 overall and 7–1–0 in Big Ten play.
How the game unfolded
Hayashi opened the scoring in the 24th minute after a corner kick by Grace Shank. Emma Yee equalized for Illinois four minutes later. Hayashi then finished another attack from a Shank corner in the second half to restore UCLA’s lead.
The Bruins outshot Illinois 24–4, including a 15–1 advantage after halftime. Illinois goalkeeper Izzy Lee made eight saves, while Mariangela Medina recorded one for UCLA. The persistent second-half pressure eventually produced the goal that separated the teams.
CSB Take
UCLA did enough attacking work to keep forcing another decision from the Illinois defense. The Bruins needed patience after losing their first lead, and Hayashi supplied the decisive finish when another chance arrived. Sustaining that pressure while limiting the opponent’s opportunities is a useful formula for the next conference match.
