UCLA linebacker Jalen Woods was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12. Woods recorded a team-high nine tackles in the Bruins’ 17–15 win at Oregon two days earlier. The conference also credited him with matching his career high of two tackles for loss.
The Oregon performance
UCLA’s announcement said Woods recovered a fumble during the road victory. The Bruins limited Oregon to 73 rushing yards and 272 total yards. That defensive performance helped UCLA finish a two-point game against an opponent ranked No. 13 entering the matchup.
The victory moved the Bruins to 5–0 under coach Bob Chesney. UCLA described it as the program’s first win over a ranked Oregon team in Eugene. Woods became the third UCLA player to receive the conference’s defensive weekly honor this season.
CSB Take
Woods’ award reflects a performance that helped turn a tight road game into a win. Tackles behind the line and a recovered fumble are especially valuable when the final margin is only two points. The Bruins’ next task is to keep that defensive control consistent as the conference schedule continues.
