Ariana Lopez-Angel scored twice as Cal State Northridge defeated UC Irvine 4–2 in women’s soccer on Oct. 10 at Anteater Stadium. The Matadors earned their third consecutive victory. CSUN finished the match 5–5–4 overall and 3–1–1 in Big West play.
How the game unfolded
Jordyn Canister opened the scoring with a first-half penalty. Lopez-Angel added two second-half goals, answering quickly after Fiona Shin brought UC Irvine within one. Michelle Monroy then scored her first collegiate goal to extend CSUN’s lead to 4–1.
Shin scored again for the Anteaters in the 89th minute, but the final response came too late to change the result. UC Irvine finished with a 15–13 advantage in shots. The loss left the Anteaters 4–5–3 overall and 2–2–1 in conference play.
CSB Take
CSUN’s quick answer after Irvine’s first goal prevented the match from staying close for long. The Matadors then added the extra finish that gave them room to absorb the late goal. For Irvine, the review should connect its chance creation with the defensive moments that allowed the margin to widen.
