The Sacramento State Hornets defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters 3–1 in women’s volleyball on Oct. 10 at Bren Events Center in Irvine. Sacramento State won 26–24, 22–25, 25–19, 25–19 to complete its first Big West road trip with two victories. The Hornets improved to 9–8 overall and 4–2 in conference play.
Marthaler takes over late
Victoria Marthaler led all players with 21 kills, including eight in each of the final two sets. Skyler Gartin added nine kills without an error and finished with eight blocks. Makenna Wiepert recorded 41 assists, 19 digs and three service aces.
UC Irvine finished with 52 kills but committed 29 attack errors, hitting .137. Sacramento State hit .235 and held a 10–9 advantage in blocks. The Anteaters split the opening two sets before the Hornets gained control late.
CSB Take
Sacramento State combined Marthaler’s finishing with pressure at the net to close the match. Keeping UC Irvine’s attack below .200 in every set helped the Hornets sustain that advantage. The Anteaters need cleaner attacking stretches to make their kill production translate into more successful sets.
