Sam Fuld declined an offer to lead the Athletics’ baseball operations, according to an Oct. 10 Reuters report citing ESPN. The report said Fuld would remain the Philadelphia Phillies’ president of business operations. The Athletics’ search followed the August firing of general manager David Forst.
The reported search update
Reuters also reported that Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith remained a leading candidate. The Oct. 10 report described an ongoing search. MLB’s earlier coverage had described the club as evaluating several possible replacements for Forst.
The search came after a 64–98 Athletics season, according to Reuters. The club has been playing its home games in Sacramento during its stadium transition. That creates a significant planning period for the next baseball-operations leader.
CSB Take
The Athletics need a clear leadership structure as they make their next roster decisions. Fuld’s reported decision narrows one path without settling who will take the job. The next useful development will be a confirmed appointment and an explanation of how the incoming leadership intends to improve the club.
