Sonoma State University named Joan McDermott interim director of athletics effective April 15, announcing the appointment on April 20.
Experienced leadership joins the rebuilding effort
McDermott previously led athletics at the University of San Francisco and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her appointment came as Sonoma State evaluated how to restore Division II sports.
The university said McDermott would work with its Athletics Fiscal Feasibility Team. Sonoma State later announced a fall 2027 return for 10 programs.
