San Diego Gulls Set for 2026-27 Rivalry Opener Against Ontario Reign at Pechanga Arena

The San Diego Gulls open their heated 2026-27 AHL Pacific Division rivalry series with the Ontario Reign on October 14 at Pechanga Arena San Diego, aiming to continue their historical edge in this close competition.

The San Diego Gulls will open their American Hockey League (AHL) Pacific Division rivalry series against the Ontario Reign on October 14, 2026, at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. PDT with coverage available on AHLTV via FloHockey and on the Gulls Audio Network.

San Diego and Ontario share a longstanding rivalry fueled by geographic proximity — just over 100 miles apart — and the similar competitive spirit of their NHL affiliates, the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings. The 2026-27 season will see the teams meet eight times, double the four meetings from the previous season.

In 2025-26, the Gulls finished 2-1-1-0 against Ontario, winning both home games. Their all-time record against the Reign stands at 55-42-7-3. Entering the current season, the Gulls hold a 2-1-1-0 record with five points and 14 goals scored, while allowing 12. Ontario sits just one point behind with a 2-1-0-0 record.

Both teams have identical power play percentages this season at 13.3 percent (2-for-15). San Diego has a strong penalty kill at 76.9 percent, successfully killing 10 of 13 penalties.

San Diego head coach Dave Manson noted the challenges posed by the Reign’s quick pace and effective transitions, emphasizing the variability of AHL rosters. “It’s the first time we’ll see them with their real lineup, and we look forward to a good test,” Manson said.

Forward Nico Myatovic expressed enthusiasm for the rivalry and confidence in San Diego’s blend of skill and grit, highlighting the impact of skilled rookies. “We can play that skilled game but then we also have a lot of grit, and we’ve got a good back end, so I think we’re just solid all throughout,” he said. “It’s a huge rivalry anytime we play the Reign. We’re getting up for it in the room and we’re looking forward to it.”

CSB Take

The rivalry between the San Diego Gulls and Ontario Reign continues to be a highlight of the AHL Pacific Division schedule, offering intense competition driven by geographic and organizational ties. As the Gulls open this expanded eight-game series with a solid early-season record and strong team dynamics, their preparedness for Ontario’s quick style will be crucial. This matchup not only fuels fan engagement but also serves as a valuable test for both teams’ development and depth throughout the demanding AHL season.
