No. 17 California Golden Bears women's field hockey lost 2-1 to Stanford in their ACC regular-season finale. Liz Klompmaker scored her 15th goal, but postseason hopes depend on other conference results.

The No. 17 University of California, Berkeley women’s field hockey team lost 2-1 to the Stanford Cardinal in their Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season finale on October 29, 2026, in Stanford, California.

Stanford opened the scoring early in the first quarter with Gemma Townsend netting an unassisted goal. Later in the second quarter, Star Horlock scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Natalie Hoppe to give Stanford a 2-0 halftime lead.

California’s offense surged in the third quarter, outshooting Stanford 7-2 and earning seven penalty corners. Forward Liz Klompmaker scored California’s lone goal in the third quarter, her 15th of the season and 46th career goal, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Despite applying sustained pressure through the final quarter, the Golden Bears were unable to equalize.

The Bears finished with 10 shots overall, including seven on goal, while Stanford recorded five shots and two penalty corners. With the loss, California’s ACC record stands at 2-6, placing them ninth in the conference standings. Their postseason fate now hinges on the result of the upcoming Boston College versus Syracuse game, where a Syracuse victory would secure California a spot in the ACC Championship.

CSB Take

Though the University of California, Berkeley women’s field hockey team fell 2-1 to Stanford, the Golden Bears demonstrated resilience and offensive capability, particularly in the third quarter with Liz Klompmaker’s impactful scoring. The ability to create scoring chances suggests potential as they await the critical Boston College-Syracuse match to determine postseason qualification. This scenario highlights the competitive balance within the ACC and underscores the importance of execution and depth in future high-stakes contests.
