The UC Irvine Anteaters women’s volleyball team has demonstrated remarkable resilience as three key players—Jessica Bates, Brianna Brewer, and Kendra MacDonald—have returned from major knee injuries that sidelined them over the past two years. Their comebacks have fueled the Anteaters’ rise to become one of the top three teams in the Big West Conference during the 2026 season.
Jessica Bates, a freshman setter/opposite, endured two ACL tears—first in high school and again in the 2024 preseason at UC Irvine—before a stress fracture limited her 2025 season. Despite setbacks, Bates has maintained a positive mindset grounded in her faith and leadership. She recorded standout performances this season, including a nine-kill, 24-assist, 21-dig match against Southeastern Louisiana.
Brianna Brewer, an outside hitter from Rancho Cucamonga, overcame three ACL surgeries and related complications. After a prolonged rehabilitation, she made her collegiate debut in September 2026 with an impressive 11 kills on .385 hitting against New Mexico State. Brewer’s determination and support from coaches and family have been vital in her return to form.
Kendra MacDonald, a senior veteran outside hitter, suffered a patella injury in September 2025 that ended her senior season early. Committed to continuing her volleyball career, she returned for a fifth year and resumed play in October 2026. MacDonald has already made a significant impact, helping lead a comeback victory over California Baptist with seven kills and providing crucial veteran leadership.
Head Coach Ashlie Hain praised the trio’s character and perseverance, saying, “I truly believe in these young women and their potential. They are three players with great character and integrity, so when I see them back on the court I get chills because I am so proud of them.” The players each credited their faith, support systems, and mental resilience as key factors in overcoming their injuries and returning to competition.
