UC Santa Barbara Men’s Water Polo secured a narrow 11-10 victory over No. 8 UC Irvine on October 30, 2026, in Irvine, California, achieving their third consecutive top-10 upset this season. The Gauchos’ defense was formidable throughout the match, notably holding the Anteaters scoreless in the second quarter, which proved critical to their success.
The Gauchos surged in the second quarter with a 3-0 scoring run, breaking a close game. Key contributors included Finn Genc, Charlie Johnson, Camren Simoncelli, Luigi Canepa, and goalkeeper Wyatt Pieretti, whose crucial saves helped maintain UCSB’s slim lead. The quarter-by-quarter scoring was UC Santa Barbara 4-3-2-2 and UC Irvine 3-0-4-3.
This win places UC Santa Barbara atop The Big West standings with the head-to-head tiebreaker over UC San Diego and a half-game lead over California Baptist. Should California Baptist drop either of its next two games and UCSB defeat Cal State Fullerton on November 8, the Gauchos will clinch The Big West Regular Season Championship.
UC Santa Barbara will return home for their final match of the regular season and non-conference play against No. 4 USC on November 7, 2026, at Santa Barbara High School. That game will also serve as Senior Day, honoring the team’s graduating athletes.
