Point Loma Nazarene University Women’s Soccer Battles Back to Tie No. 24 Cal State LA 1-1

Point Loma Nazarene University Women's Soccer rallied from a halftime deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Cal State LA, with senior Grace Nelson scoring the equalizer and Bea Levi making a career-high seven saves.

Point Loma Nazarene University Women’s Soccer rallied from a first-half deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Cal State LA on September 10, 2026, in San Diego.

Cal State LA took the lead in the 29th minute. The Sea Lions responded in the 60th minute when senior midfielder Grace Nelson scored the equalizing goal off an assist from Priya Torres. Nelson’s initial shot was saved, but she converted the rebound to tie the match.

The teams finished with eight shots on goal each, while Point Loma outshot the Golden Eagles 16-13 overall. Point Loma goalkeeper Bea Levi made a career-high seven saves, including several key stops late in the game to preserve the draw.

Point Loma head coach Kristi Kiely commented on her team’s resilience, saying, “We’d certainly like to avoid being in that spot again, but they showed some resilience and an ability to stay in it mentally.” She praised Nelson’s offensive role, noting, “I’m really excited for Grace. It was good to be able to get her to the 10. We’ve been needing to use her at the six, and she does a good job there, but she’s most threatening at the 10. It was fun to be able to get her up there and glad that she was rewarded for it.”

Other offensive threats came from Madison Khan and Maddy Saruwatari, who tested the Cal State LA goalkeeper with shots that were saved. Kiely also highlighted Levi’s performance: “That’s what we’ve come to expect from Bea. She has the athleticism and the reaction to be able to make those saves.”

With the draw, Point Loma extended its unbeaten streak to four games, posting a 1-0-3 record. Kiely reflected on the team’s development, saying, “We’re young, that’s the reality… I’d like us to be able to put it all together. I feel like each game has taught us something. Sometimes we’ve been able to learn from those moments and sometimes we haven’t and today taught us something different.”

Point Loma Nazarene University will next play at Cal State San Marcos on September 12, 2026, at noon.

CSB Take

Point Loma Nazarene University Women’s Soccer demonstrated strong mental fortitude by coming from behind to tie a nationally ranked opponent. Grace Nelson’s game-tying goal and Bea Levi’s standout goalkeeping performance highlight key strengths as this young team gains valuable experience. While consistent wins remain a goal, the Sea Lions are beginning to show they can compete with top programs, which bodes well as they prepare for conference play.
