Macklin Celebrini Named 11th Full-Time Captain of San Jose Sharks, Youngest Active NHL Captain

Macklin Celebrini has been named the 11th full-time captain of the San Jose Sharks, becoming the youngest active captain in the NHL. He led the team with record-breaking scoring and international honors in the 2025-26 season.

The San Jose Sharks officially named Macklin Celebrini as their 11th full-time captain on September 25, 2026, making him the youngest active captain in the National Hockey League at 20 years old. Celebrini, a centerman selected first overall by the Sharks in the 2024 NHL Draft, has quickly established himself as a dominant force in men’s ice hockey.

During the 2025-26 NHL season, Celebrini recorded 115 points, ranking fourth in the league. He tied for fourth with 45 goals and finished seventh with 70 assists. His final point of the season set a new franchise scoring record for the Sharks. Celebrini was involved in 46.2 percent of all goals scored by San Jose that season, marking the highest rate ever by an NHL teenager and any player in Sharks history.

The Sharks experienced a significant turnaround last season with a 19-win improvement and 34 additional points in the standings, the second-largest single-season improvement in franchise history. Celebrini led the Sharks in nearly every major offensive category, including goals, assists, points, plus/minus, power-play goals, overtime goals, and game-winning goals.

Recognized alongside NHL greats Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby, Celebrini is one of only three NHL teenagers to finish in the top five of a season’s scoring rankings. Internationally, he represented Team Canada at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics as the youngest NHL player on the roster and led the tournament in goals, helping Canada secure a silver medal. Later, he served as captain of Team Canada at the 2026 World Championship, earning Best Forward and All-Star Team honors.

His 2025-26 accolades also include being named IIHF Male Player of the Year and a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Memorial Trophy. Celebrini was voted Sharks Player of the Year for the second consecutive season by Bay Area media.

CSB Take

Macklin Celebrini’s elevation to captain of the San Jose Sharks represents a landmark moment for a young player already establishing himself as a franchise cornerstone. His historic achievements and leadership role signal a revitalized Sharks team poised to build on significant progress from last season. Celebrini’s continued development and guidance will be key to sustaining the team’s competitiveness and playoff aspirations in the coming years.
