The University of California, Berkeley men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the No. 1 SMU Mustangs at Edwards Stadium on October 24, 2026, in their final home game of the regular season.
The Mustangs scored first in the 29th minute and added a second goal in the 50th minute. Despite the two-goal deficit, California outshot SMU 14-12 overall and led 2-1 in shots during the first half but was unable to convert any scoring chances.
Goalkeeper Thomas Grimes made four saves in his second start of the season, helping to keep the score close. Offensively, Noe Morales led the Golden Bears with four shots during the match.
California will conclude its regular season on the road against Stanford on October 30, 2026. That match is scheduled to air on ACCNX.
CSB Take
Although the California Golden Bears fell to the nation’s top-ranked team, their ability to generate more shots than SMU demonstrates promising offensive growth. Thomas Grimes’ solid goalkeeping performance also highlights the team’s defensive efforts. To finish the season successfully against Stanford, Cal will need to improve finishing and maintain defensive resilience. This experience against elite competition will be beneficial as the Golden Bears look ahead.
