Sophomore attacker Tomas Perrone and freshman center Ilias Angelopoulos of the University of California, Berkeley’s California Golden Bears men’s water polo team were recognized with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation weekly honors following dominant victories over two top-10 opponents.
Perrone was named the MPSF Delfina Player of the Week after scoring seven goals and totaling 11 points on 63.6 percent shooting over the weekend. Returning from the U20 European Championships where he helped Team Spain win a silver medal, Perrone contributed two goals against the Pacific Tigers in an 18-7 home win on September 11. On September 13, he recorded five goals and four assists—including a first-quarter hat trick—to lead Cal to a 19-7 road victory over the No. 6 UC Davis Aggies.
Freshman center Ilias Angelopoulos earned MPSF S&R Sport Newcomer of the Week honors. He scored two second-half goals against Pacific and posted his first collegiate hat trick with three goals on perfect shooting versus UC Davis. His early goals helped spark a 6-1 first-quarter run in that game, setting the tone for Cal’s decisive win.
Both players were first-time collegiate award recipients. The California Golden Bears demonstrated early Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dominance with these strong performances, defeating No. 10 Pacific 18-7 at home and No. 6 UC Davis 19-7 on the road.
