Chargers vs. Rams Week 8 preview: Justin Herbert’s protection challenge, the Rams’ rushing options and how to watch the Los Angeles matchup.

The Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams share a stadium, but they enter Sunday's meeting with different immediate needs. The Chargers are 0-6 after their bye, while the Rams stand 3-4 following a victory over Las Vegas. Their Week 8 matchup begins at 4:05 p.m. EST on FOX, with the Rams designated as the home team at SoFi Stadium. 125

For the Chargers, the extra preparation time only matters if it produces a more functional offense. The Rams need to build on their latest win and avoid allowing a struggling opponent to establish confidence early. The shared venue removes a conventional travel challenge, leaving the execution of the matchup itself at the center of the afternoon.

Herbert needs help from a reshaped line

The Rams' official preview described a Chargers starting offensive line featuring four rookies because of injuries. Justin Herbert's most recent outing ended with 204 passing yards and an interception in a 22-6 loss to Kansas City. The Chargers entered the week last in scoring offense, giving their protection and offensive operation clear reasons for review. 1

The Chargers should seek an opening plan that gives Herbert accessible answers against pressure. A quicker throw can reduce the time the line must maintain its blocks, while movement before the snap can help clarify the defense. Those adjustments still require accurate timing, secure catches and enough rushing production to keep the defense from anticipating every call.

The Rams should make the Chargers demonstrate that their revised approach can work across several possessions. An early short completion is less damaging than a missed tackle or a coverage mistake that turns it into a long gain. Maintaining disciplined rush lanes can also keep Herbert from solving a difficult passing situation by escaping into open space.

The Rams have a backfield foundation

Los Angeles' official reporting highlighted the usefulness of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum as a tandem after the win at Las Vegas. That gives the Rams a way to test the Chargers' run fits without relying entirely on Matthew Stafford to carry the afternoon. The offense can use a productive rushing sequence to influence the defense's alignment and create favorable passing situations. 23

The Chargers need to avoid the chain reaction that follows repeated successful early-down runs. If the Rams can create third-and-short, their play-action and passing options become harder to narrow. Consistent tackling near the line would give the defense a better chance to challenge Stafford on more predictable dropbacks.

For the Rams, balance is useful only when it reflects what the defense allows. A productive passing matchup should still be attacked, and a poor rushing look should not become an obligation simply because the previous drive succeeded on the ground. The goal is keeping Stafford in an efficient operation rather than chasing a particular run-pass ratio.

Personnel and situational details

The Rams said Wednesday that they would not open the practice windows for Myles Garrett or Terrance Ferguson during Week 8. That establishes a meaningful availability limit without requiring speculation about a possible late-week return. Other developing injury questions should be checked against the final game report rather than inferred from the early-week discussion. 4

Special teams and field position can also matter if the Chargers make this a lower-scoring contest. An offense trying to regain consistency benefits from a shorter field, while the Rams can make the challenge harder by avoiding unnecessary return opportunities. Both teams should value possessions because an early giveaway could alter the entire sequence of play calls.

CSB Take

The Rams have the more convincing recent result, but the Chargers' bye introduces an important preparation variable. I will watch whether Herbert gets quicker, clearer answers and whether the offensive line can avoid immediate negative plays. The Rams should test that protection while using their own backfield to establish control. For the Chargers, visible improvement means sustaining an offense across multiple drives rather than producing one encouraging series and returning to the same problems.
