The LAFC Foundation has demonstrated a continued commitment to fostering community engagement and youth empowerment in Los Angeles throughout early 2025. The foundation focuses on expanding access to soccer for underserved youth, while providing mentorship and facilitating opportunities that extend beyond the sport.
In recognition of these efforts, LAFC received the 2024 Kevin Payne Community Impact Award from the U.S. Soccer Foundation, an honor given to professional teams that effectively use soccer to engage young people and support under-resourced communities.
On February 19, LAFC players Timothy Tillman and Nkosi Tafari visited Sixty-First Street Elementary School to help mark Black History Month with a read-along event highlighting Black culture and literacy, promoting creativity and community among students.
Furthering empowerment initiatives, LAFC hosted a Women’s Empowerment Night on March 1 in partnership with Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The event featured a panel of female LAFC staff engaging with high school girls to inspire leadership and foster a supportive environment. Participants also received swag bags to take home.
On March 8, LAFC and BMO launched the Thinkwatts Youth Soccer Tournament, designed to support youth soccer development in greater Los Angeles. The tournament offered young athletes the chance to showcase their skills while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.
The foundation also encourages ticket donations to provide underserved residents with opportunities to attend live LAFC matches. Collectively, these programs have positively impacted more than 30,000 youths in the Los Angeles area.
CSB Take
The LAFC Foundation exemplifies how a professional sports organization can leverage its platform for meaningful community impact. By integrating on-field involvement from players like Timothy Tillman and Nkosi Tafari with diverse initiatives addressing literacy, empowerment, and youth development, the foundation builds a comprehensive support system for local young people. Sustaining and expanding these programs will strengthen community engagement and create lasting benefits well beyond the soccer field.
