The Philadelphia Waterdogs defeated the Boston Cannons 13-10 on Labor Day in Philadelphia to advance to the 2026 Premier Lacrosse League Championship game. The Waterdogs’ defense, guided by captain and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Gavin Adler, was crucial in limiting Boston’s top scorers.
Under the direction of head coach Bill Tierney, a lacrosse coaching legend with seven national championships, the Waterdogs used extra preparation time after securing the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. A key conversation between Tierney and Adler regarding defensive matchups led to Adler being assigned to defend Boston’s leading scorer Marcus Holman, while Kenny Brower covered Brian Kelly and rookie Brendan Staub took on Coulter Mackesy.
This defensive strategy proved effective as Boston’s top three point-scorers combined for just four goals and one assist on 4-for-24 shooting. Holman went 2-for-12, Kelly scored once on three shots, and Mackesy had one goal and one assist on 1-for-9 shooting. The Cannons’ 10 points tied their season low for a game.
The Waterdogs’ defense has been strong throughout a six-game winning streak starting in early August, allowing an average of 8.8 points per game during that stretch. The team has benefited from the growing trust and collaboration between Tierney and Adler, who regularly discuss game plans and defensive strategies.
Philadelphia will face the Denver Outlaws on September 20 in New Jersey for the PLL Championship. Denver’s offense is led by Brennan O’Neill, Logan Wisnauskas, Pat Kavanagh, and Jared Bernhardt, promising a challenging matchup.
CSB Take
The Philadelphia Waterdogs’ victory over the Boston Cannons underscores the impact of player-coach collaboration on defensive strategy. Gavin Adler’s detailed preparation and leadership, combined with Bill Tierney’s experience, helped neutralize one of the league’s top offenses and secure a championship berth. As Philadelphia prepares to face the Denver Outlaws’ potent attack, this synergy will be critical in determining the outcome of the 2026 PLL title game.
