Rams Beat Chargers 24–9 Behind Second-Half Surge

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24–9 on Sunday, Nov. 1, at SoFi Stadium, scoring the final 21 points to win their second straight game. The Rams went ahead just before halftime and added two touchdowns in the third quarter. Blake Corum sparked the ground game after the break, while Quentin Lake and Trent McDuffie each intercepted Justin Herbert. The Rams improved to 4–4, and the Chargers fell to 0–7.

One deep pass flips the first half

The Chargers held the Rams without a first down on their first five possessions. Cornerback Tarheeb Still intercepted Matthew Stafford on the Rams’ opening possession, but the Chargers went three-and-out after the takeaway. Lake later returned his interception 46 yards to the Chargers’ 19, setting up Brandon McManus for a 30-yard field goal and the first points of the game.

Cameron Dicker hit from 34, 46 and 41 yards to put the Chargers up 9–3 late in the second quarter. The Rams got the ball back with 1:55 left in the half and finally found room downfield. Stafford connected with Tutu Atwell for 40 yards, and Kyren Williams finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds left. McManus’ extra point put the Rams ahead 10–9 at halftime.

Atwell’s catch mattered because it let the Rams cover ground quickly while they still had time to finish the possession. Until then, the Chargers had forced the Rams to start over almost every time they took the field. The touchdown also gave Sean McVay’s offense the lead and the first possession of the second half, a chance to build on the drive without asking Stafford to force another deep throw.

Blake Corum gives the Rams room to run

Corum took the first four carries of the third quarter for 32 yards. He ran for 55 yards on the possession and finished it with a 23-yard touchdown to put the Rams ahead 17–9. Corum ended the game with 73 yards on 11 carries, and Williams added 56 yards on 16 carries. Together, the two backs accounted for 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The Rams had only 10 rushing yards before halftime, according to the NFL’s Week 8 roundup. That made the opening drive of the third quarter the clearest break from what had come before. The Rams could keep calling runs after Corum picked up yards early in the series, and his touchdown left the Chargers needing a touchdown and two-point conversion just to tie the game.

Two interceptions turn into 10 points

The Rams stretched their lead again when McDuffie intercepted Herbert on a throw intended for tight end Charlie Kolar. McDuffie returned the ball 26 yards to the Chargers’ 22, giving the Rams a short field for the second time. Stafford found Puka Nacua on an 18-yard screen for a touchdown with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter. The two interceptions produced 10 points, according to the Rams’ official recap.

The Chargers had a chance to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter when they reached the Rams’ 24. Herbert completed a fourth-down pass to tight end Orande Gadsden, but the play came up short of a first down. Neither team scored in the final period. The Chargers’ game report points to the Rams’ touchdown before halftime and their touchdown on the first drive after it as the decisive swing.

CSB Take

The Rams’ best stretch came in three different ways. Stafford hit a deep throw when the offense needed a quick score, Corum moved the chains when the Rams had the lead, and the defense gave Stafford a short field when the Chargers needed to respond. Nacua’s screen touchdown was a fitting finish to that stretch because Stafford could get the ball out quickly and let his receiver finish the play. That mix gave the Rams more ways to win than they showed during the first five possessions.

For the Chargers, the first half showed how much a defense can do to keep a game within reach. Still’s interception and the early stops gave the offense opportunities, and Dicker converted all three of the team’s scoring chances into points. The missing touchdown mattered as soon as the Rams started finishing drives. By the time the Chargers reached the Rams’ 24 in the fourth quarter, they needed two scoring possessions and had already spent much of the second half trying to recover from one bad stretch.

The CSB matchup preview identified the Rams’ two-back rotation and the Chargers’ ability to stay on schedule as issues to watch. The result bore that out, especially after halftime, when Corum and Williams gave the Rams an easier way to move the ball. The Rams are back at .500 with their second straight win, while the Chargers are still looking for their first.
