Sacramento River Cats field operations leader Chris Shastid won the Pacific Coast League Groundskeeper of the Year award Oct. 6. The selection followed surveys of league managers, players and executives. Shastid completed his 14th season with Sacramento.
The shared-ballpark workload
His crew maintained Sutter Health Park for both the River Cats and Athletics. The calendar included 75 home games for each team, alongside exhibitions and special events. Field operations managers Carson Race and Alexis Rogers worked with Shastid on the shared venue.
The recognition came after Sacramento was named a finalist for three organizational awards Oct. 2. Those categories covered community service, inclusion and professional development. Together, the announcements recognized work beyond the team’s on-field results.
CSB Take
A shared ballpark puts sustained demands on field preparation. The award provides recognition from people who used and evaluated the playing surface. Sacramento’s staff had to meet those expectations across an unusually busy calendar.
