Saint Mary’s College of California announced the hiring of Nick Meyer as the new catching coach for the Saint Mary’s Gaels men’s baseball team on September 14, 2026. Head coach Eric Valenzuela praised Meyer’s professional experience and college accomplishments ahead of the 2027 season.
Meyer, a Southern California native, played catcher at Cal Poly from 2016 to 2018. He compiled a career batting average of .298, highlighted by a .343 average in his junior year. Meyer was named the 2018 Big West Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the All-Big West First Team.
He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Mets and played professionally from 2018 through 2024, reaching as high as Triple-A with the Mets’ affiliate Syracuse Mets. Meyer also spent time in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, finishing his career with a .260 average over 134 professional games.
In 2025, Meyer began his coaching career as a student assistant at Cal Poly before joining Saint Mary’s College of California’s staff. Valenzuela called Meyer “an absolute gamer” and expressed confidence Meyer would have an immediate impact on the Gaels’ catchers. Meyer expressed enthusiasm about joining a rising West Coast program with a respected coaching staff.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels baseball program made its third NCAA Regional appearance in 2026. Meyer’s addition is expected to help the team build on that success.
CSB Take
Nick Meyer’s blend of collegiate defensive excellence and extensive professional experience offers valuable expertise to the Saint Mary’s Gaels baseball program. His entry onto the coaching staff comes at a pivotal moment as the Gaels aim to sustain and elevate their success within the competitive West Coast Conference. Meyer’s presence behind the plate and on the coaching staff should contribute significantly to the mentoring of catchers and the overall strength of the pitching staff starting with the 2027 season.
