Cuesta College Men’s Basketball begins its second season under head coach Jamoni Barber, the program’s fourth coach since 1965. Barber took over after the 2025-26 season had already started, during which the team endured a six-game losing streak before improving to nearly an even record late in the year.
The 2026-27 Cuesta roster features 15 players, including all-Western State Conference guard James Nugent and five other returning players. Sophomore forwards Ryan Gerhardt and Austin Anderson bring experience in the paint, while guards Evan Lin, Iven Gonzalez and Aedan Phelan add depth and skill.
The team added nine newcomers, notably local players Luke Jacobson, a forward returning to San Luis Obispo after redshirting at Marquette University, and all-Mountain League guard Jack Boyer. Other new contributors include Caiden Wisnieski, a first-team all-League selection at Lathrop High School, and Miller Morgan, the North Bay Player of the Year and CIF MVP who led San Marin High School to a state championship.
Cuesta opens the 2026-27 season on the road against Gavilan College in Gilroy on Thursday, October 29, at 6 p.m. Gavilan has not qualified for the playoffs in three seasons and has won only six games since their last postseason appearance. The Cougars’ first home game is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at 1 p.m., leaving time for Halloween activities afterwards.
CSB Take
Cuesta College Men’s Basketball enters its second season under Jamoni Barber with a blend of experienced returners and talented newcomers that could improve the program’s competitiveness in the Western State Conference. After a challenging first season marked by a late start and early losses, the team appears poised to build momentum early, especially in its opening matchup against Gavilan College. The infusion of local stars alongside veteran players provides a foundation for growth as the Cougars seek to elevate their standing in the league.
