San Jose, Calif. – The Cal Poly Mustangs football team was edged out by the San Jose State Spartans 30-20 in their first road game of the 2026 season on September 12. Despite a determined effort that tied the game early in the fourth quarter, Cal Poly could not hold off the FBS opponent and conceded 10 unanswered points in the final minutes.

The Mustangs found themselves trailing 20-13 entering the fourth quarter before running back Misa Paiau scored his first touchdown of the season on a one-yard plunge. Kicker Josue Lopez followed with the extra point to tie the game at 20-20. However, San Jose State reclaimed the lead with a 40-yard field goal by Trajan Sinatra and extended their advantage after a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Weaver to receiver Carson Clark, sealing the victory.

Cal Poly quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr. completed 24 of 40 passes for 249 yards, marking a career high in pass attempts. Receiver Fidel Pitts led all receivers with 103 yards and an early two-yard touchdown catch, while Jaden Green also scored his first touchdown of the season. Senior defensive back RL Miller posted a career-best 12 tackles in the game.

The Mustangs showcased strong defense throughout, limiting San Jose State to just three third-down conversions on 12 attempts and committing only one penalty for 10 yards. In contrast, the Spartans had five penalties totaling 55 yards.

After starting the season with wins over Idaho and Central Washington, Cal Poly was aiming for their first 3-0 start since 2012 but dropped to 2-1 with the loss. The team will return home to face San Diego on September 19 at 5 p.m.

CSB Take

Cal Poly’s competitive showing against a higher-division opponent highlights their growing resilience and defensive discipline despite the loss. The Mustangs demonstrated offensive promise, particularly through Grigsby’s career-high passing attempts and the emergence of key playmakers. Their ability to limit penalties and hold San Jose State to few third-down conversions shows a solid foundation to build on. With a home game coming up, Cal Poly has the opportunity to regain momentum and continue pursuing a strong season start.
