PHOENIX, Ariz. — The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Soccer team secured a crucial 2-1 comeback victory over Grand Canyon on September 12, 2026, marking their first-ever win in Arizona and their inaugural triumph against the Antelopes.
Grand Canyon scored early in the second half with a goal in the 47th minute, but senior Kaden Standish leveled the score just four minutes later with a textbook header assisted by Peleg Brown’s free kick. The match-winning goal came in the 72nd minute from forward Steinar Bjornsson, who unleashed a trademark long-range strike from approximately 35 yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Owen Beninga was instrumental between the posts, making seven saves including a critical stop in the final minute to preserve the lead. Defender Cole Harris provided solid support throughout the full 90 minutes in his second career start, bolstering the Gauchos’ defense.
Substitutes Zac Siebenlist and Jakob Methvin contributed significantly to the team’s improved second-half performance, with Siebenlist applying relentless pressure on the Grand Canyon defense and creating multiple offensive opportunities.
Head coach Tim Vom Steeg expressed satisfaction with his team’s resilience and composure in a tough away environment: “It is a tough place to play, and Grand Canyon put us under a lot of pressure. We weren’t perfect, but we defended when we needed to, scored two good goals, and found a way to win. That’s two tough road wins in a row now. That’s a good step for this group, and I’m really pleased with the way they’re coming together.”
The Gauchos will return home next week to face San Diego State on September 17 and Oregon State on September 20.
