Los Angeles Football Club and Zelle collaborated during the 2024 MLS regular season to raise $102,000 for Latinos for Education through the “Saves for the Community” initiative. Zelle pledged to donate $1,000 for every save made by an LAFC goalkeeper throughout the season.
The donation was presented at halftime of LAFC’s regular season finale against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 19 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Latinos for Education is a national Latino-founded organization focused on creating leadership pathways for Latino educators.
Amanda Fernandez, founder and CEO of Latinos for Education, expressed gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing that the funds will expand opportunities for Latino educators and support leadership programs such as the Aspiring Latino Leaders Fellowship and the Latinx Teachers Fellowship.
Denise Leonhard, general manager of Zelle, highlighted the importance of investing in community initiatives and the excitement of watching the donation grow with each goalkeeper save. LAFC Co-President and Chief Business Officer Larry Freedman underscored the club’s commitment to making an impact beyond the soccer field.
In addition, Zelle enhanced the fan experience at BMO Stadium by promoting digital payments with “Settle up in the 70th” signage, encouraging fans to use Zelle for easy transactions during home games.
CSB Take
The partnership between LAFC and Zelle demonstrates a creative approach to linking sporting achievements with community impact. By tying goalkeeper saves directly to charitable giving, the program engaged players and fans alike in supporting Latino educators. This initiative not only advances educational equity but also sets a compelling example for other sports organizations aiming to combine athletic performance with social responsibility.
